For many young adults today, moving house isn’t a once-in-a-lifetime milestone—it’s simply part of life. One year you’re sharing a flat with friends, the next you’re squeezing into a studio across town or relocating to an entirely new city. And with every move comes the same question: what furniture is actually worth taking with you?
That’s the idea behind IKEA’s new KOMPISHÄNG collection, launching globally in August 2026. Designed specifically for young city dwellers who move frequently, the 13-piece collection combines affordability with portability, offering furniture that’s easy to pack, carry, and reassemble without sacrificing style.
Made from solid pine, powder-coated steel, and durable canvas, every piece is designed to survive move after move while feeling equally at home in a shared apartment, a compact studio, or a first long-term home.
Inspired By Real Renters – Not Trends
Rather than beginning in a design studio, KOMPISHÄNG started inside the homes of young London renters.
IKEA’s design team visited people aged 20 to 28 living in central London to understand how they were really navigating modern city life. The homes told a familiar story: moving boxes repurposed as bedside tables, improvised storage solutions, and a carefully edited collection of belongings that had travelled from one rental to the next.
One thing quickly became clear. Every purchase was made with the next move already in mind. Furniture needed to be lightweight enough to carry, durable enough to last through multiple homes, and versatile enough to suit whatever space came next.
“Even if you move often, you don’t want your home to feel temporary. We saw how carefully people chose the things they carried with them from place to place, and that insight shaped the collection. We wanted the collection to be portable but still have a permanent look, people should feel settled and considered,” says Dora Ding, Product Developer at IKEA of Sweden.
Designed By People Living The Same Lifestyle
Perhaps the most interesting part of the project is who designed it.
Instead of relying solely on experienced designers, IKEA brought two recent industrial design graduates into the project through its internship programme in Älmhult. Both were in their mid-twenties—the very audience the collection was being created for—and joined the team before a single product had been sketched.
Over the course of five months, they helped develop nearly half of the collection, contributing six of the thirteen products.
Their influence shaped more than just individual pieces. Early in the process, they challenged a brighter, more colourful design direction, arguing that smaller homes benefit from a quieter visual palette. Natural pine, soft beige tones, and restrained accents of red and green, they believed, would help compact spaces feel calmer and more spacious.
That decision ultimately became one of the defining characteristics of the collection.
“We absorbed inputs like this directly into the design process and set out to create something that feels like it belongs in your home, not pieces that remind you you’re about to leave. Balancing permanence and portability became a guiding principle across the entire collection,” says Ina Tidbeck Sjöblom, Range Leader at IKEA of Sweden.
With more young adults renting for longer and relocating more frequently than previous generations, KOMPISHÄNG feels like a thoughtful response to the realities of modern urban living. Rather than treating furniture as something disposable, IKEA is embracing the idea that the best pieces are the ones that can follow you wherever life takes you next.

In a small home, every piece of furniture needs to earn its place—and the KOMPISHÄNG stools do exactly that.
Designed with flexibility in mind, this pair of solid birch stools can be used as extra seating whenever guests drop by. But when they’re no longer needed, they fit neatly together like puzzle pieces, transforming into a compact storage unit instead of taking up valuable floor space.
Whether your home shifts from bedroom to living room throughout the day or regularly hosts family and friends, these multifunctional stools make it easy to adapt your space without adding clutter.

KOMPISHÄNG Mirror ($29.99)
This Mirror Does More Than Help You Get Ready. A mirror is a must-have in any home, but the KOMPISHÄNG mirror goes one step further by adding a little extra organization to your daily routine.
Made from clear-lacquered solid pine, it can be hung on the wall or placed on a dresser, making it easy to adapt to different spaces as you move from one home to the next.
What makes it especially clever are the discreet grooves built into each side of the frame. They’re perfect for displaying favorite photos, postcards, or little reminders, turning an everyday mirror into a personalized noticeboard. It’s a simple yet thoughtful design that helps make even a temporary space feel a little more like home.
KOMPISHÄNG Bookend ($11.99)
Not everyone has room for a dedicated bookshelf—especially if you’re moving from one rental to the next. That’s where the KOMPISHÄNG bookend comes in.
Designed for book lovers with limited space, it keeps your favorite reads neatly together whether they’re stacked on the floor, lined up on a windowsill, or displayed on a tabletop. Instead of ending up scattered around the apartment, your collection stays organized and easy to move.
Made from powder-coated steel in a bold red finish, the bookend features integrated handles that let you carry your books from room to room—or from one home to the next—without disturbing the stack. It’s a simple but thoughtful design that makes even a growing book collection feel effortlessly portable.
KOMPISHÄNG Hanger For Door ($19.99)
When floor space is limited, the back of a door is prime real estate—and the KOMPISHÄNG over-the-door organizer makes the most of it.
Made from durable, washable canvas, it instantly adds extra storage without requiring a single nail or screw. Adjustable straps secure it neatly over the door, making it an ideal solution for renters who can’t—or simply don’t want to—drill into walls.
Hooks provide an easy spot for jackets, bags, or scarves, while generously sized pockets keep everyday essentials within easy reach.
KOMPISHÄNG Hanging Storage With Three Compartments ($9.99)
If you’ve ever packed up a wardrobe only to spend hours folding, carrying, and unpacking it all again, IKEA’s KOMPISHÄNG hanging storage might be your new favorite moving hack.
Designed to hang neatly inside a wardrobe, it keeps clothes organized and visible for everyday use. But when it’s time to move, a simple zip transforms the organizer into a portable storage bag that you can carry on your back.
Your clothes stay protected, neatly stacked, and ready for the journey—without needing to be folded into boxes or suitcases. Best of all, once you’ve arrived, you can simply hang the organizer back up and get on with settling into your new home. No unpacking required
KOMPISHÄNG Plant Pot ($49.99)
Anyone who’s ever moved with houseplants knows they’re often the trickiest belongings to transport. Pots tip over, leaves snap, and finding a safe way to carry them usually means improvising with boxes and blankets.
The KOMPISHÄNG plant pot was created to solve exactly that problem.
The idea came after designer Wiebke Braasch visited the home of a young renter who spoke about the stress of moving her beloved plants safely from one apartment to the next. Inspired by that conversation, IKEA designed a plant pot that protects your greenery when it’s time to move.
Made from natural jute, the pot features a built-in protective cover that rolls up around the plant during transport, while sturdy handles make it easy to carry without any extra packaging. Once you’ve settled into your new home, the cover simply rolls away into a hidden inner compartment, leaving behind a stylish planter that looks as though it was designed that way all along.
KOMPISHÄNG Desk ($99.99)
Whether you’re working from home, hosting friends for dinner, or simply need an extra surface in a compact apartment, the KOMPISHÄNG desk is designed to adapt. More than just a workspace, it functions as a versatile table that can easily shift between work, dining, and everyday living.
One of its smartest features is what you don’t have to do: assemble it. The table unfolds from flat to fully functional in seconds with just two pulls and two clicks, making it ideal for renters and frequent movers who’d rather skip the toolbox.
A solid pine tabletop paired with a soft green powder-coated steel frame gives the piece a warm, understated look that feels timeless rather than temporary. And when it’s time for your next move—or simply to rearrange your space—a discreet handle tucked beneath the tabletop makes it easy to carry from room to room or home to home.
KOMPISHÄNG Back Cushion ($29.99)
The first night in a new apartment isn’t always glamorous. Bare walls, cold floors, and rooms that haven’t quite started to feel like yours can make even the most exciting move feel a little temporary.
That’s exactly the problem the KOMPISHÄNG back cushion is designed to solve.
With its clever triangular shape, it transforms almost any corner into a comfortable place to sit. Lean it against a wall for support while reading or working, or use it to turn a bed into a cozy sofa for movie nights and guests. Fold down the top section for extra neck support, making it just as comfortable for lounging as it is practical for everyday living.
A built-in handle makes it easy to carry from room to room, so comfort can follow you wherever you need it—and wherever your next move takes you

Crafted from solid pine, it features 12 hooks ready to hold everything from jackets and caps to bags, scarves, and even necklaces.
