Multifunctional Furniture Inspired by Construction Toys

Freeform is a playful and multifunctional furniture range which can be adapted to its owners needs. Screw threads cut into the wood enable quick and easy construction with no tools and the ability to take varying forms providing seating, tables or shelving.

The furniture created by Dan Hoolahan is designed to adapt to regularly changing environments, situations and needs. It provides the user with an alternative to buying cheap, low quality furniture items, intended only for short term use before being thrown away.

Instead, Freeform can go from home to home, taking on the function that is most needed. In small apartments it can be swiftly reassembled from seating to shelving to save space. Or used as children’s bedroom furniture, it can grow as they do.

The simple form and assembly is inspired by construction toys. It aims to encourage interaction by being quick and easy to assemble with no tools and an element of playfulness, far removed from the labour many find in flatpack furniture. Freeform consists of 4 components made from ash, which are assembled by screw threads cut into the wood. By increasing functionality to reduce its environmental impact, Freeform is designed to be used and reused.
