Michigan Woman Builds Remarkable Campervan: Sleeping Area Transforms Into Spacious Shower Room. Step Inside ‘Vincent Van Go’

If you ever thought that apartment living was your only option with a small budget, you’d be wrong. Michigan-based digital nomad Anjali is proof that you can live comfortably without spending the earth. She created a multipurpose marvel campervan and utilized the space so well that she was even able to include a shower room under her bed.

After college, Anjali had some free time before starting her new job. She decided to build her first van, Vanny, in March 2020 and travel until her job started in September 2020. Her plan was to then settle down in an apartment in Seattle. However, the unexpected arrival of the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted her plans. Despite the setback, Anjali quickly adapted to the situation as her job transitioned to a remote setup. This unexpected change allowed her to extend her time on the road, opting to continue her travels rather than settling in one place.

While working as a software engineer at Amazon, she decided to do yet another conversion and built her van, Vincent Van Go, on her own over a year with a few breaks for road trips. She tackled everything from the plumbing and electrical work to the carpentry and was able to create something truly spectacular.

Now, Anjali spends her summers living on her vintage boat and the remainder of the time living in her campervan with her two dogs, Theo and Remi. When she’s not using it, she rents it out for other people to enjoy. You can find out more about renting Anjali’s campervan here.

In the years that have passed since the COVID-19 pandemic started ravaging the world, Anjali has traveled to 44 states. She loves being able to slow down, find local hidden gems, and explore dog-friendly attractions at her leisure. Anjali only plans to give up tiny home living when the time comes to build her own permanent home for her and her pets.

Michigan-based Anjali purchased a 2014 Chrysler Promaster 2500 and transformed it into a converted custom camper named Vincent Van Go. She tackled everything herself, including electrical work, plumbing, and carpentry.

Anjali started with a bare-bones van, but it didn’t stay that way for long. Using her previous van-building knowledge from her first build, Vanny, she created a comfortable house on wheels for herself and her two dogs, Remington and Theodore.

Anjali has incorporated a range of natural and contemporary materials and colors, such as sleek black cabinetry paired with gorgeous wood bench tops. She chose to install a sliding door between the cab and the living area for for privacy and safety.

Anjali’s kitchen resembles those you’d find in your average inner-city apartment. It boasts a natural wood countertop with a two-burner cooktop, and a large fridge/freezer. The black splashback contrasts nicely with the whitewashed walls of the living area while subtly separating the spaces.

Sliding windows in the kitchen allow for plenty of ventilation, natural light, and a view of wherever she’s parking. Anjali also cleverly installed toe-kick storage for all her kitchen essentials. While small, the kitchen is as practical as any apartment kitchen.

While you might think you must sacrifice convenience features while living in a van, that’s not the case in Vincent Van Go. Anjali installed an individual kitchen cabinet adjacent to the main meal preparation area with a gorgeous black sink boasting running hot and cold water.

Anjali thought outside the square when it came to storage solutions. She installed storage cabinets above the bed, ensuring ample space for clothing and other bedroom essentials.

While Anjali can enjoy a comfortable bed in the rear of Vincent Van Go at night, her dogs can enjoy a luxurious sleeping spot during the day. The bed folds up to form a comfortable two-seater sofa, with ample space for Remington and Theodore – or Anjali and a friend.

The mobile table that tucks away under the bed when it’s not in use can be pulled out to form a convenient side table. However, it can also form part of the dinette, with one seat on either side to form an intimate dining arrangement.

While few campervans have full-sized beds, Anjali’s is the exception. There’s plenty of space in the living area to sleep two people adjacent to the kitchen. The windows in the doors let in plenty of natural light.

It can be surprising enough to learn that Anjali’s bedroom converts into an intimate dining and living space, but it has one more trick up its sleeve. Anjali’s bed is hiding a shower room with instant hot water. It features full tiling for waterproofing, a stone shower floor, and a cleverly installed shower head for easy washing. Anjali also has fixtures in place to install a shower curtain.

Once the shower curtain is hung, it’s hard to believe that the shower room was previously a living, dining, and bedroom area. It’s fully transformed!

While the dinette benches are convenient for guests coming over for dinner, one is also a practical storage solution for the toilet. This is tucked away inside a bag in the drawer. Whenever she needs to use the toilet, she can slide out the drawer within seconds.

Traveling in a van provides Anjali many opportunities to try new activities and explore exciting locations. As a result, she has left plenty of storage space under the bed in the rear of the van for her paddleboard, hiking gear, beach toys, and other equipment. This can be tucked away out of sight when not in use but is then easily accessible from the outside of the van.
