The average 312ft² apartment is often labeled as impractical and uncomfortable—but that’s not the case with CP Apartment. Designed by Brazilian architecture firm Studio Papaya, this 312ft² (29m²) “Transformer” apartment in downtown São Paulo maximizes functionality. Located between Parque Augusta and Praça Roosevelt, it is a smartly designed space where a single area is thoughtfully crafted to serve multiple needs.
The space initially housed a bedroom, living room, and bathroom. However, the existing wall and frames were removed as part of the new design to turn the mere few square meters into one space.
In place of restricting walls that made the small apartment even smaller, Studio Papaya installed hybrid furniture to promote multifunctionality and spaciousness. The designers established separation between the areas through floor design. Tauari wood also known as Brazilian Oak hardwood, was installed for the ‘private’ area, and two different colored hydraulic tiles were used in the kitchen and on the balcony. Studio Papaya also installed granite slabs in the bathroom and yellow epoxy paint in the shower.
All multipurpose furniture for CP Apartment was made in partnership with designer Laura Garcia. A retractable bed, a sofa, mobile stools, a sliding desk rack, and a folding table with chairs were all handcrafted for this space. Alongside functionality, these pieces were also stylish with a natural freijó veneer finish, light green Formica detailing, and black metalwork.
With cleverly integrated custom furniture, the property’s occupants can use a single space spanning a mere 29m2 as a bedroom, living room, dining room, TV room, exercise room, and home office. Just a small amount of reorganization is required.
As you step into the apartment, you’re immediately greeted by a sleek wardrobe with sliding doors.
The wardrobe is part of a mirrored cube that seamlessly integrates a hidden sliding desk, a TV console, and a discreet entrance to the bathroom, combining functionality with modern design.
A sliding desk rack with a folding chair is tucked away behind what looks like an innocent mirror. In an instant, your home can be turned into a home office.
TVs can take up a great deal of space in an average home if they’re not wall-mounted. In CP Apartment, the TV slides into the wall. You can simply slide it out when you want to watch it.
A 29m2 apartment doesn’t look like it would comfortably house dinner guests. However, the occupants can take advantage of a folding dinner table on wheels with folding chairs. They can be set up next to the kitchen.
Once dinner is over, it can be folded down to take up minimal space once more.
The table can also have one leaf folded down to function as a desk.
The kitchen spans one length of the apartment, with gorgeous wood cabinetry adding warmth and coziness to the space.
The green tiles also separate the kitchen from the private areas of the apartment. The kitchen has abundant storage space and full-size appliances despite being in a small apartment.
Floor-to-ceiling cabinetry in the living and sleeping area of the apartment can solve the average apartment dweller’s storage woes.
Two versatile seating units on castors can be effortlessly repositioned, serving as coffee tables, footrests, or extra seating as needed.
The living and bedroom area is as versatile as they come. While it’s a comfortable living area by day with a sofa and footstools, it’s also a luxurious bedroom by night.
A Murphy bed pulls down from the wall to sit over the top of the sofa.
A quaint balcony lies adjacent to the bedroom and living area. It offers great central city views and an ideal place to show off your prized plants.
