When everyone else is gearing up for a summer of beach trips, holidays to resorts, and island adventures, Lucy and Ben are working 60 hours a week. And while everyone else is out enjoying themselves, they’re putting everything they earn into a travel piggyback to be able to tour Europe in a self-converted campervan.
Lucy and Ben, self-proclaimed English travelers, have been on the road in their blue campervan for several years and visited 24 countries. They work hard year-round through the peak travel seasons, then hit the road to far-flung corners of the world at the most unpopular times.
While no destination is ever the same as before, there’s a common theme amongst them all: their blue campervan. Since they first began their adventures, they have turned their van into something that represents them, their passions, travels, hopes, and dreams. It’s a little rough, a little worn, but well-travelled. It also doesn’t fit into any stereotypical motorhome style, with everything a work in progress and removable at a moment’s notice.
From the wardrobe hammock to the “vandelier” with fairy lights and driftwood, there’s nothing cookie-cutter about this van. But even though it’s not picture-perfect or of significant value, it’s valuable to Ben and Lucy.
The van contains memories from different legs of their trips. The rug comes from a Greek salesperson in Delphi, while the curtain and tapestries are from Ben’s India backpacking adventure. There is nothing about this van that doesn’t come with its own story.
These trips have also allowed Ben and Lucy to think about their footprint. As such, they have installed a 15-litre water tank under their sink, not only for convenience but to do their part to minimise single-use plastic bottles.
The kitchen cupboards have recently seen an update, with wonky hinges fixed and rattles removed. The spice rack above the benchtop is made from driftwood from a beach.
You won’t find any bling or designer touches on this big blue beast, but what you will find is a van full of memories, adventures, and untold tales of journeys yet to be taken.
